Two Pink Lines

By Caitlin LaBarge

A new play at The New York Theater Festival

May 20, 23 and 26, 2024

About the Show

What happens after those two pink lines turn “positive”? There are as many stories as there are pregnancies, all intimately personal and all a mirror on society. In “Two Pink Lines,” playwright and doula Caitlin LaBarge pays homage to “The Vagina Monologues”, centering dramatic stories of pregnancy, birth, abortion and loss - all drawn from real-world experience, research and interviews - in a time when the right to personal reproductive choice is under attack.

Meet the Production Team

  • Caitlin trained at the American Academy of Dramatic arts and is thrilled to be producing her first full length original work . Caitlin has performed in productions throughout the Tri-State Area including: The Importance of Being Ernest (Cecily), Cymbeline (Caius Lucius), Teach Me How to Die (Various), The After Dinner Joke (Dent), Sterling Renaissance Festival (Lord Mayor’s Wife), Simon the Invisible Boy (swing).

Caitlin is incredibly excited to be combining her two passions with this production. After going through her own pregnancy loss journey in 2019, Caitlin started writing Two Pink Lines in order to answer the question: Why does no one trust uterus havers with their own reproductive journey? While doing research and interviews for this production Caitlin felt called to birth work. Since becoming a DONA certified birth doula at the end of 2022, she has worked to bring the joy and love into every single Labor & Delivery room.

No one should feel infantilized as they become a parent.

  • Kristen is so excited to bring Two Pink Lines to life! Being a doula and having first hand knowledge of the winding journey toward parenthood, she only hopes this show can inspire and electrify others. You are seen, you are enough, you can do this. Many thanks to Caitlin for her amazing vision and trust, to the cast for their amazing talent and heart, and, as always, to Lorelei and Caspian for being everything.

Meet the Cast

  • Sophia Aranda, a first-generation Cuban-Nicaraguan actor and singer, is rooted in New York City's vibrant arts scene. After finishing her training at NYU/Tisch within the Atlantic Theater Company program, she has since showcased her talent in a diverse range of roles in both film and theater.

Sophia says: “Every uterus-having person should have the right to decide how they would like to be treated when in the deeply vulnerable and personal process of having a baby. There is a wealth of misinformation regarding the real-life implications of giving birth and having children, and I believe that every opportunity to tell the stories of those who have taken that step creates the opportunity for necessary discourse and learning! We need more empathy present in the birthing process as well as in the case of someone deciding not to give birth. Im excited to be a part of such a powerful and important project, and I would like to dedicate my performance to all those fighting to protect those rights and to the people who shared their stories in the creation of this play!”

  • Robert L. Bradvica first moved to NYC to attend the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in 2015, and since then has dabbled in all aspects of theater, from directing and producing, to stage managing and acting. He was last seen acting as Dr. Charles Vash in Onomatopoeia Theatre Co.'s "You Are Not Alone", and is currently Assistant Directing “Hamlet” for MAD Company. He is beyond excited to be performing again, and particularly honored to be apart of a show that is such a deeply poignant, and relevant examination of the many facets of birth and female reproductive rights.

Robert says: “There is so much about these topics that is left up to us to learn for ourselves, and this production is an invaluable part of that conversation. My thanks to the team, and everyone that is here seeing this show today.”

  • Hana Fatima Dehradunwala is a Pakistani-American writer, actor and recent startup industry runaway, going so far as to change the spelling of her name from Hannah to Hana for anonymity. She is a recent graduate of the William Esper Studio in NYC and one of the co-founders of Small Town Productions. Her passion for acting and theater sparked in Karachi, where she spent her formative years, and discovered the joys and pitfalls of having your emotions live too close to the surface; A clear sign that her career in tech was doomed from the start. Hana’s credits include a production at Playwrights Horizons downtown and several short films being released in late 2024.

Hana says: “I think Two Pink Lines is a brave production. It is necessary and important, and does the excruciating job of compiling, highlighting and making digestible the experiences of birthing people across the country, so that we may come out the other side a little more knowledgeable, a little more aware of where these issues stand currently, and a lot more empathetic.”

  • MJ Hughes is thrilled to be joining the Two Pink Lines cast! Credits: *Billboard On Board* Dueling Pianist and Performer for Holland America Cruise Line. BM: WKU. Thanks to the team and to my friends and family for their unwavering support.

MJ says: “This show was immediately interesting to me as a woman from a very red, southern state with limited female reproductive rights politically speaking. I knew I was child free from a very young age and I knew I would face difficulty in my state if I continued to live there. I was shamed for obtaining birth control from physicians in the area so I knew obtaining female sterilization would be difficult or impossible. My character in Two Pink Lines essentially faces the same exact plight- I practically RAN to the audition. I ran in the hopes of telling these stories and in the desperate hope that people will listen. Not just to the childfree stories or the politically frustrating stories or the MANY stories in which we as women lose our agency, but also the crucial story of hope and strength in women throughout this entire show.”

Regional credits include: The Producers (Ulla), Chicago (Hunyak), 42nd Street (Annie). Last year she landed her favorite role ever, becoming Mom to her son Milo.

Melissa says: “Having had my first child just 8 months ago, I felt bewildered and overwhelmed by so much unknown in the process and experience of giving birth. Sharing some of those silent voices and bringing this brilliant and brutal part of life into the light feels really meaningful both personally and at this moment in time.”
